About The Certificate Scroll
The Proud Irish Heritage Certificate Scroll is a beautifully crafted document that is designed to proudly display and pass on a persons or families Irish Heritage to future generations. It is a document that declares those mentioned as having a strong bond and interest in their Irish background.
Historically the certificate can be passed on from one generation to the next ensuring the memory of our ancestors and the legacy they bequeathed us will continue long into the future.
There are two lines left blank that’s where the descendant and the Irish ancestor can be named.
On the top line you can enter either a family name or an individuals name. e.g. “The Kelly Family” or, “John Kelly”.
On the second line you can enter the Irish ancestors details. This might be just their name or you could enter the town or county they came from in Ireland, as well as their birth date or date they left Ireland if known. Example: “Mary Kelly (Born 1843), Co. Cork”.
The “Proud Irish Heritage Certificate Scroll” is exclusively available from specialist Irish retailers and this website. It is a specially printed document on a distinctive paper which is noteworthy for its look, feel, texture and similarity to authentic, traditional Irish Parchment.
Why this Certificate is so special
This is the only Irish certificate scroll designed to commemorate both Ancestor and Descendant together.
This document creates a link between the far distant past and the present. It is one way to celebrate ones links to Ireland.

Designed and made in Ireland
The Certificate is designed and made in Ireland by Irish designers and skilled craftspeople.
The design is based on Irish manuscript design and Irish type. The graphics include the 4 provinces of Ireland Connacht, Ulster, Leinster and Munster), a map of Ireland, the Irish Tricolour (flag) and the shamrock – (a symbol of Ireland).
The national emblem of Ireland, the Harp is also featured.
Ireland is the only country in the world with a musical instrument as its national symbol.

Meaningful, Thoughtful Art
One of the main criteria in the creation of this artwork is that it must be aesthetically pleasing, designed to look great and be engaging to look at.
As a piece of wall art it will look fantastic in any environment and provides a great topic of conversation. The Certificate could be a memento of Ireland or as a gift from someone who knows the importance of Ireland to the owner.
We have designed the Certificate to fit a standard frame size, therefore no unnecessary extra costs in framing or displaying it.

Personalised
This Certificate is also special in that its a piece of wall art that is personalised and thus very important and meaningful.
It records the name of the Irish ancestor that took the courageous journey to a new land. It also records their descendants and by doing so acknowledges the success of that journey and evidence that it was all worth while. It was a journey that was made for the future of their family.
It is also something that could become a family heirloom, passed from one generation to the next.

Specialist Printing
The Certificate uses a special printing process overlooked by skilled operators.
A feature of this process is the extra addition of a metalic gold ink that decorates the document through-out. Its a subtle feature that doesn’t distract from the document’s core message.

Distinctive Parchment Paper
A special feature of the artwork is the unique parchment paper used. The particular characteristics of this prestigious and deluxe organic paper is its semi translucent mottled look and hard feel you would expect from an actual sheet of traditional animal parchment. This is the only paper that emulates the qualities of real Vellum / parchment.

Free Calligraphy Pen and Irish Handwriting Techniques
The Certificate will look fantastic no matter what your writing style is. To compliment your Certificate we have included a special Calligraphy pen with a chiseled edge. This pen enhances your hand lettering, easily giving the appearance of Irish Calligraphy. Further below on this webpage are techniques to help you achieve this.
The Heritage Certificate Wording
The wording of the scroll is based on Article 2 and Article 3 of the Constitution of Ireland.
The certificate’s aim is to engage with Ireland’s Diaspora around the world. It acknowledges and marks the deep connection to Ireland felt by many people of Irish descent. It is an invitation to those people to connect back to their Irish roots.
The Scroll Wording
“It is the firm will of the Irish Nation, in harmony and friendship, to unite in good faith all the people of the island of Ireland with their descendants, at home and abroad, past and present in all the diversity of their identities, traditions, race, color, and beliefs for the good and betterment of mankind; the nation of Ireland, its people, their descendants, its culture; and together share and celebrate a proud Irish heritage.
Furthermore, the Irish Nation cherishes its special affinity with people of Irish ancestry living abroad who share its cultural identity and proud Irish heritage.
This document acknowledges the above named as descendant(s) of Irish emigrants, to having the entitlement and birthright as persons of Irish ancestry, to champion and celebrate their Irish culture and their proud Irish heritage.”
Who is the Certificate for?
The Certificate Scroll’s purpose is to celebrate Irish Ancestry.
It is suitable for either a family name or an individual’s name.
Whether purchased for oneself or as a gift, it is an attractive and meaningful document designed to grace any home.

This Certificate allows you to enter the name of a family as descendants of Irish ancestors.
It acknowledges that this family has the entitlement as persons of Irish ancestry, to champion and celebrate their Irish culture and their proud Irish heritage.

This certificate recognises the person named as having the birthright as a person of Irish ancestry, to celebrate their Irish culture and their proud Irish heritage. It can be purchased for oneself – maybe as a memento of Ireland, it also makes a great gift.
This certificate will always be a reminder to the person named that they are part of Ireland’s story and to respect the memory of our ancestors, and to the Irish legacy they bequeathed us.

The Certificate makes a wonderful gift as a Baptismal, Christening gift or a birthday gift for any age.

How to fill in the Certificate
There are two lines of text to fill in on the certificate and what you put on it depends whether its for an Family or an individual.
The Certificate is for a Family Name
If the certificate is to celebrate the family name and displayed in the family home, then on the top line you’d write something similar to:
The Kelly Family
or perhaps
The Kelly Family, Boston
On the second line you then enter your Irish ancestors details if you know them. You can enter their name, birthdate or county in Ireland they came from. Or you can enter the year they emigrated from Ireland. If there are numerous ancestors or perhaps you are not sure of the information you could just enter “Irish Emigrants” on this line. It may look similar to this:
John Kelly, Ireland
or perhaps
John Kelly (Born 1845) Co. Mayo
or perhaps
The Kelly Family, Co. Mayo
or perhaps
Irish Emigrants
The Certificate is for an Individual
If the certificate is for an individual, then on the top line you’d write something similar to:
Mary Kelly
or perhaps
Mary Kelly, Boston
On the second line you then enter your Irish ancestors details if you know them. You can enter their name, birthdate or county in Ireland they came from. Or you can enter the year they emigrated from Ireland. If there are numerous ancestors or perhaps you are not sure of the information you could just enter “Irish Emigrants” on this line. It may look similar to this:
John Kelly, Ireland
or perhaps
John Kelly (Born 1845) Co. Mayo
or perhaps
The Kelly Family, Co. Mayo
or perhaps
Irish Emigrants
Immigrant or Emigrant?
Whichever word you use to describe your ancestors moving from one country to another is up to you.
The main difference is that immigrant is used in reference to the country moved to, and emigrant is used in reference to the country moved from.
‘To emigrate‘ means to leave your own country and go and live in another country, permanently.
“My grandparents emigrated from Ireland in 1920.”
‘To immigrate‘ means to enter and settle in a foreign country, permanently.
“My grandparents immigrated into the United States in 1920.”

Some tips on how to use your calligraphy pen:

Hold the nib at a constant angle
Hold the pen as you normally would when writing.
Keep the chisel tip at a constant 45° angle so that the downward and horizontal strokes are the thickest strokes.
Practise your strokes on a spare sheet of paper so you get used to holding the pen and the variation in line thickness.
You can download this free worksheet that will help you get used to the pen. Please remember …. have fun!

Create letters in parts
When using a calligraphy pen each letter is created from a number of strokes. This is easier than you might think.
For instance the “a” – draw the vertical line first, (you can add a little swoosh at the end).
Then holding the nib at the same angle – draw the rest of the letter “a” stroke 2 above.
Remember keeping the nib at the same angle while moving the pen – will give you that calligraphy look.

Practise, have fun, trace your design.
If you don’t wish to try the calligraphy freehand on the certificate we suggest two methods.
1: Try your wording a few times on a sheet of paper. When you are happy with it you can then place it beneath the Certificate and trace the letters with your pen, or maybe with a pencil first if you wish.
2: Download our Irish font, type out your words. As in point no.1 above place beneath your certificate and trace it.
Our Parchment paper is semi-translucent – perfect for tracing.
Its important to let your ink rest for a few moments after writing so as not to smudge your work.
Helpfull Video
Below is a short video, showing you how easy it is and how much fun it is to use your calligraphy pen.

We have designed this certificate to be 11″ x 17″ (Tabloid) in size. This is a convenient and standard size that is easy to get ready-made frames to fit, therefore no expensive custom framing needed.
Flattening the Certificate Scroll

11"x 17" matt with 18" x 24" Frame
