The Design
This Our pen and ink wash painting of Kylemore Abbey, Co. Galway, Ireland.
Kylemore Abbey and Victorian Walled Garden, regarded as one of Ireland’s most romantic buildings was originally built as a Castle in 1867 as a romantic gift from Mitchell Henry for his wife Margaret.
Unfortunately Margaret died a few years later and Mitchell returned to England. Before he left he built a Gothic church and  Mausoleum for himself and Margaret as their final resting place. The castle was sold to the Duke and Duchess of Manchester in 1903, who resided there for several years before being forced to sell the house and grounds because of gambling debts. In 1920, the Irish Benedictine Nuns purchased the Abbey castle and lands after they were forced to flee Ypres (Belgium) during World War I.

Settling at Kylemore, the Benedictine Community opened a world renowned boarding school for girls and began restoring the Abbey, Gothic Church and Victorian Walled Garden to their former glory.

Now a top tourist attraction, the Benedictine nuns invite visitors to discover the magic, beauty and peacefulness of Kylemore Abbey.
