ST. PATRICK'S BELL AND SHRINE
This print shows an image and background information about the treasure.

St. Patrick’s Bell
This ancient bell, thought to have belonged to St. Patrick, dates back to between the 8th and 9th century AD. It is made from iron and coated in bronze, with a handle on the top and a clapper inside. Historically, bells like this one were used to call people to prayer at churches and monastic sites.

St. Patrick’s Bell Shrine
To keep the bell safe a special box, called a shrine, was made to house it. This magnificent piece of art was crafted around 1100 AD, making it an incredible piece of Irish history. Constructed from bronze and decorated with gold, silver, amber and glass, this shrine is truly a sight to behold. The intricate filigree pattern is adorned with spirals, celtic knotwork and animals, including snakes.

Note: This subject is also available in a square format version in our Treasures of Ireland series.
