THE ARDAGH CHALICE
This print shows an image and background information about the treasure.
The Ardagh Chalice is one of the finest examples of Irish metalwork from the Middle Ages, and was found in 1868 by two young boys digging for potatoes near Ardagh, Co. Limerick.
This large two-handled silver cup is decorated with gold, gilt bronze, brass, lead pewter and enamel, and is assembled from 354 separate pieces. This complex construction is typical of early Christian Irish metalwork and makes the Ardagh Chalice a truly unique and special item.
The Ardagh chalice was found with some other items; another smaller chalice and four brooches. These treasures together are known as the ‘Ardagh Hoard’ and they are currently housed in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.
Note: This subject is also available in a square format version in our Treasures of Ireland series.
