THE BROIGHTER BOAT
This print shows an image and background information about the treasure.
The Broighter Boat is part of a larger Iron Age hoard discovered in 1896. The boat, just 18.4 cm long by 3 7.6 cm wide is the earliest depiction of a sailing ship from Ireland and shows just how advanced Irish civilisation was at this time. The vessel has benches, rowlocks, oars and a paddle rudder for steering. Also included with the boat were tools for grappling, forks, a yardarm and a spear.
Note: This subject is also available in a wide format version in our Treasures of Ireland series.
