THE LISMORE CROZIER
This print shows an image and background information about the treasure.
The Lismore Crozier was discovered in a blocked-up doorway at Lismore Castle in County Waterford in the early 1800s, and is dated to between 1100 and 1113 AD.
It consists of a wooden tubular staff lined with copper-alloy plates and embellished with silver, gold, niello, and glass.
The crook is capped by a decorative openwork crest, and both sides of the crook are decorated with round studs of blue glass with red and white millefiori insets.
Three animals with open jaws form the crest of the crozier, and these terminate in an animal head with blue-glass eyes.
The Lismore Crozier is on display in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.
Note: This subject is also available in a square format version in our Treasures of Ireland series.
