THE TARA BROOCH
This print shows an image and background information about the treasure.

The Tara Brooch, is an iconic piece of jewellery dating back to the 7th century AD. This stunning brooch is a popular symbol of Ireland and its ancestral past.

The story goes that a woman found it buried in the sand at Bettystown beach, County Meath in 1850. But many believe the brooch was actually found elsewhere and the facts were altered to avoid a legal dispute with a landowner.

It is made of cast and gilt silver and is elaborately decorated on both sides. The front is ornamented with a series of exceptionally fine gold filigree panels depicting animal and abstract motifs of scrolls and triple spirals. These are separated by studs of glass, enamel, and amber.

A silver chain made of plaited wire is attached to the brooch by means of a swivel attachment.

Note: This subject is also available in a square format version in our Treasures of Ireland series.
